Fritz Haber is the scientist that devised the weaponization of tear gas, chlorine gas, and mustard gas. He was a chemist that was born into a wealthy Jewish family in Prussia. He won a Nobel Peace prize for the Haber-Bosch Process, a method of getting ammonia. His inventions never had a massive impact, but were definitely a factor in WWI. His wife Clara committed suicide after he used their ‘art’ to kill 86,000 people. Later during WWII he was driven out of Germany by Hitler because he was Jewish and they no longer had need of his skills, despite what he had done for Germany.

Haber's respiratory system was affected by his gas testing because he would breathe in the fumes from his experiments. Such exposure caused weight loss and eventual lung scarring, and possibly even respiratory failure in severe cases.
The phosgene fumes caused lung inflammation, shortness of breath, weight loss, and other symptoms. Tear gas causes mucus to flow from the nose, hacking cough, nausea, and vomiting. Finally, chlorine gas weakens one's immune system.
